Great to see my first Swallows of the spring during my lunch break today. Seen skimming over the water at Grimsbury Reservoir (Banbury), together with a couple of Sand Martin. It's always a special moment seeing your first of the year, never failing to plant a big smile on my face. There were six in total, chattering away, even landing on the perimeter fence for a short while, before disappearing NW. What were probably a further 3 birds were cruising around there again, when I popped in this evening.
Was a slight surprise to see them today with the winds very W / NW. These birds appear to be part of a steady trickle of hirundines through the country today. The winds will now drop for a couple of days which may well pave the way for a few more arrivals. Fingers crossed!
